This week, we studies different castles and how different people had different styles to building castles. The first castle we went to was Dover Castle which was so huge! It was built on a hill overlooking both the town of Dover and the English Channel. This castle was built by Henry the second as a place to live and to show off royal authority; it was also built as a defensive fort in case anyone tried to invade the mainland. The castle also had mideval tunnels dug under the castle to get places quickly, and they let us go in them and it was so quiet in the tunnels, I can understand why being walled up was a punishment. We also got to see the refurbished inside of the castle and sit on the 'throne'! Next, we went to Deal castle, which was more of a fort and less of a 'castle'; it was built by Henry the 8th who needed to erect a bunch of forts by the coast to defend against invaders (the catholic Spanish)- it was clearly not meant to be lived in by royalty/nobility. Last, we went to Walmer Castle which was by far my favorite castle; it was also built by Henry the 8th as a defensive fort but it was lived in by nobility and as such has a really rich interior and some beautiful gardens by it. Queen Victoria also paid the place a visit; and the gardens were by far my favorite part. We also saw some english flowers; there were snowdrops growing by the trees and some mushrooms, and by far the best thing we saw was the sheep in the field next door. Overall, seeing 3 castles in the same day really illustrated how different castles are; even if, like Deal and Walmer castles; they were built at the same time designed for the same purpose.
The below pictures are pictures I took of the town/parts of dover castle while standing on Dover Castle's roof:
